The registration number — a small detail that links entire pedigrees
Every dog with a pedigree certificate has a registration number. On PEDIA.dog it is the key that lets pedigrees piece themselves together — no retyping, no searching. Read on to find out where it is and why it pays to fill it in.
What is a registration number
The registration number is assigned by the studbook — in the United Kingdom that is The Kennel Club. You will find it printed on your dog's pedigree certificate; the exact format varies from one kennel club to another. It is your dog's unique "number plate": two dogs may share the same name, but never the same registration number.
How PEDIA.dog uses it
When you upload a pedigree certificate, we read your dog's ancestors from it — including their registration numbers. And this is where the magic happens: if one of those ancestors is already on PEDIA.dog (say, with the breeder your girl came from), it is recognised by its registration number and linked automatically. Nothing to look up, nothing to retype — the ancestor's profile appears in the pedigree, photo and all.
It works the other way round, too. Fill in the registration numbers of your own dogs and they will link automatically into the pedigrees of puppies that have gone from you to other breeders. Your breeding stays visible throughout its whole line.
What happens without one
You lose nothing — the dog stays in the pedigree as normal. You simply look after it yourself: the name, the photo and any other details are yours to fill in by hand. With a registration number, the ancestor links straight to its real profile, and photos and results then keep themselves up to date. And it is fine to add the number later — pedigrees link up retroactively as well.
Where to enter it
- The easiest way: upload the pedigree certificate. We read the number for you and offer it for you to accept with a single click.
- Manually in the dog's profile — the registration number field in the Pedigree section or in the dog's basic details (see My Dogs).
- With ancestors — when filling in an ancestor's details in the pedigree.
Tip: A filled-in microchip number serves just as well — and it also helps verify your dog's identity.
